What does “yokunai” mean? よくない？
“Sore wa yokunai desu!（それはよくないです！）”
“Kono hon wa amari yokunai.（この本はあまりよくない）”

What does Yokunai mean?
“Yokunai” means “not good”.
When the adjective “yoi (よい/良い/好い/善い：good)” becomes a negative form, it changes to “yoku-nai”.
(There are several kanji for “yoi”, but in general, it will be fine if you use “よい” in hiragana or “良い”)
Usually, the opposite of “good” is “bad”, but by saying “yokunai” your tone can be less negative than “warui (bad)”.
Example of how to use “yoku-nai”
Saikin no kare no taido wa amari yoku-nai.
最近（さいきん） の 彼（かれ） の 態度（たいど） は あまり よくない。
Recently his attitude is not very good.
Kono ryouri no aji wa yoku-nai.
この 料理（りょうり） の 味（あじ） は よくない。
The taste of this dish is not good.
Kinou, kare no yoku-nai uwasa wo kiita.
昨日（きのう）、彼（かれ） の 良（よ）くない うわさ を 聞（き）いた。
Yesterday, I heard his bad rumor.
Chian no yoku-nai chiiki wo tootte kita.
治安（ちあん） の よくない 地域（ちいき） を 通（とお）って きた。
I came through areas where public safety was poor.
A to B wa naka ga yoku-nai.
A と B は 仲（なか） が 良（よ）くない。
A and B do not get along well.
What is the past tense of “yoku-nai”?
The past tense of “yoku nai” is “yoku-nakatta”.
Here are some examples;
Sakki no lestoran no ueitolesu no taido wa yoku-nakatta.
さっき の レストラン の ウェイトレス の 態度（たいど） が 良（よ）くなかった。
The attitude of the waitress at the restaurant earlier was not good.
90 nendai, nihon wa keiki ga yoku-nakatta.
90年代（ねんだい）、日本（にほん） は 景気（けいき） が 良（よ）くなかった。
In the 1990s, the economy was not good in Japan.
Senshu, watashi no taichou wa amari yoku-nakatta.
先週（せんしゅう）、私（わたし） の 体調（たいちょう） は あまり 良（よ）くなかった。
My physical condition was not so well last week.
Another meaning of “yokunai”
There is also a different meaning of “yokunai”.
It is a slang and is mostly used in a question format.
It means “it will be OK, won’t it?”
The following are some examples;
Haburashi? Konbini de kattara yokunai?
歯ブラシ？コンビニ で 買ったら よくない？
（はぶらし？こんびに で かったら よくない？）
Toothbrush? You can just get it a convenience store, don’t you think?
Daietto nante ashita kara shitara yokunai?
ダイエット なんて 明日 から したら よくない？
（だいえっと なんて あした から したら よくない？）
You can go on a diet from tomorrow, can’t you?
Tesuto benkyou nante mae no hi ni shitara yokunai?
テスト 勉強 なんて 前 の 日 に したら よくない？
